Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is an island of the Canary archipelago, located in the Atlantic Ocean 97 km northwest of the coast of Africa. On May 26, 2009 it was Fuerteventuradeclared as a whole biosphere reserve by UNESCO.   It belongs to the province of Las Palmas, one of two that make up the Canary Islands, Autonomous Community of Spain. The capital of the island is Puerto Del Rosario (Puerto Cabras until 1956) and is the government of the island.

The indigenous name of the island before its conquest in the fifteenth century was Erbania with its two counties “Jandia and Maxorata”, which derives from the adjective majorero (originally maxo or nice).  Fuerteventura is the largest island in the province, and the second after Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Geography
This is one of the more arid islands, and also the closest to the African coast (97 km). It has an area of 1659 square kilometers, so it is the second largest island of the archipelago. To the northwest, just 6 km away, is the small island of Lobos.  It is owned by Fuerteventura and has an area of 4.58 km cuadrados.

Fuerteventura exhibits extensive plains, the result of intensive erosion throughout its history.  It is the oldest island of the archipelago, having Fuerteventura1experienced numerous volcanic eruptions. Under Canarian Network of protected natural areas, 47,695 ha of the island of Fuerteventura are occupied by 13 protected natural areas, such as 4-covered areas of the Malpais lava Grande and Chico, the site of scientific interest located on the Saladar Jandia Monument Mountain Nature Tindaya, for example.

The cuisine of Fuerteventura in general, is quite sobering, especially for customs and climatic conditions. There are a large quantity of fish products and potatoes with wrinkled or pot mojo canario.

The fish are being prepared in many ways typical of pejines, sancocho jareas, or fish, usually cherne 40 corvine sama or boiled after desalting, served with mojo, potato, sweet potato and gofio. There are also highly prized limpets and mussels collected along the coasts of the island.

They are also used as cow beef or pork for the preparation of various dishes or simply grilled, but among the highlights of Fuerteventura is goat, both grilled and composite (stewed).   In addition to animal meat, you get milk for cheese manufacture which has won several competitions. Made from goat milk, is sometimes up to 15% of sheep milk, cured with paprika oil or gofio, along with the cheese of La Palma, one of the two Canary cheeses with denomination of origin.

The length of the coast of Fuerteventura is nearly 326 kilometers, which ranked second in terms of length of coastline, after Tenerife. Around two thirds of the beaches are long with white or black sand, the remainder of boulders or mixture sand.  Pajara to the south, has 136 km of coastline.  In the town are the beaches of the Peninsula of Jandia, the largest of the Canary Islands, from Costa Calma, via Esquinzo-Butihondo, Morro Jable and Puertito de la Cruz to Punta de Jandia, Punta de Jandia, Cofete , Barlovento.

90 km north, La Oliva is the second municipality in length of coastline on the island and is dominated by sand dunes of Corralejo, El Cotillo and Majanicho. The coast is marked by several lighthouses, including the Lighthouse of the notch for its architecture and is 196 m above sea level, making it one of the highest in the islas.
