Cal Horn of Guirre

The Horn of Cal is located in the municipality of Antigua. Also called the vulture, it is located between the marshes and the Creek of Honduras, next to the beach and port of Caleta de Fuste. The complex is situated at the mouth of the Barranco de Miraflor, rising in the foothills of the Morro de la Casa (357m) and White Top Mountain (231m) between the two is the Degollada Miraflor.

Near its mouth the ravine splits into two branches, leaving amid a plain where the well is located and consists of three furnaces, a warehouse and a stall-housing of the Mescaleros, as well as a cistern.

Oven 1

It has three mouths at the Southwest and one (the oldest) to the north. It is built with a masonry exterior and gravel, giving flat and cylindrical surfaces. It is large compared to the existing ones, probably due to the high demand of production.

It has a unique staircase access and loading for three mouths. It has a mast on its upper platform, which allows for greater ease and speed in loading them using a sort of pulley. Because of its height, it represents excellent “viewpoints” of extensive coastal landscape.

Oven 2

According to information received, this is the oldest and has two openings facing east and a ramp for loading, allegedly using animal traction to raise the limestone and the combustion material (carbon). Cal Horn of GuirreAnnex to this, there are some corrals and rooms that were used to accommodate livestock. Construction also consists of large masonry walls about two or three feet thick that are filled with “entullo” to make it more solid and to avoid possible cracks caused by expansion due to combustion heat.

Oven 3

It is the smallest of the set, is a circular type, with the mouth oriented to the southwest, being the closest to the sea, similar to the previous construction. Joining in the sea, are the furnaces No. 1 and 3. There is a linear array of buildings consisting of three rooms and a fenced storage area, where the Mescaleros lived. This whole activity was highly productive.

Construction of a Fourth

It is a great store of 100m2 where they’ve hunkered down production. It is a rectangular building with stone walls and beamed ceilings with wooden planks and concrete slabs.

Construction 5

This is a cistern buried at a capacity of 300m2 with the corresponding “Alcogida” for rainwater.
