Tindaya Mountain

Tindaya is a mountain located in the Spanish town of La Oliva Tindaya Mountain(Fuerteventura Island) and has a special historical and archaeological interest for the amount of rock engravings it has.

Tindaya was a sacred place for the Aboriginal people of Fuerteventura, the majos, who sculpted it on more than 300 prints in the shape of the foot or podomorfos. The prints podomorfos are present in other islands of the Canary Islands and in areas of cultural influence.
Tindaya has been declared a place of Cultural Interest. Besides its historical value, the mountain has been recognized as a Natural Monument and Point of Interest by the Administration Geological of Canaria.  The high value of ornamental trachyte has made the stone Tindaya become exploited until recently.
In 1993 the Basque artist Eduardo Chillida completed a sculptural piece of work on the mountain Tindaya. This project lead to the reaction of various environmental groups and conservationists who argue that it jeopardizes both the “structure” of the mountain.  Furthermore, a series of alleged irregularities and corruption lead to policies known as “Tindaya Case”, being filed for justice.
